Important Update:
NMFC Changes Focused on Density

As your trusted logistics provider, Glen Raven Logistics wants to keep you informed about upcoming changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system, currently scheduled to take effect on July 19, 2025. These updates are focused on classifying freight based on overall shipment density and could have a significant impact on your shipping costs.

What Do the NMFC Changes Mean for You?

The NMFC changes are part of a broader industry shift toward density-based classification, which means that your freight will be rated based on the amount of space it occupies relative to its weight. As classifications evolve, it’s critical to ensure your shipments are assigned to the appropriate NMFC codes and corresponding freight classes to avoid unexpected surcharges.

Over 2,000 items have been identified as “in-scope” for this transition and are currently under review by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). Of those items “in scope”, over 1,400 were single class items that have been proposed to move to a new 13-subprovision density progression.

Key changes include:

  • Item Elimination: The goal of the NMFTA is to move all items with no handling, stowability, or liability issues to one generic heading, condensing commodity listings. This could mean the NMFC code you are using today will be eliminated and reassigned a new NMFC number.
  • Density Classifications: Freight that is denser (heavier per cubic foot) may fall into a lower, more cost-effective class, while less dense items (lighter per cubic foot) could be reclassified into a higher freight class, potentially increasing shipping costs.
  • Classification Simplification: Using a standardized approach will make freight classification easier to understand and more uniform in application in an effort to more accurately estimate freight charges. If you are not already doing so, you will need to provide accurate handling unit dimensions and weights for accurate rating.

Projected Timeline: Preparing You For What’s Next

The NMFTA is taking a phased approach beginning with the proposed changes in Docket 2025-1.
